What's it for? These days everyone has too many passwords, keys & codes to remember. We are told to choose a complex password for each system to secure our "stuff" from an increasingly dangerous world of criminals, hackers & marketing companies. But how many complicated and unique passwords can you remember? Most people end up using strategies to circumvent these "best practices" anyway. What you really need is a way to remember them all so you can use a strong and unique password for everything. My personal strategy was to store them in an MS-Access database which I further developed over many years. I had always intended to make a polished product for general use by others. The recent theft of customer data at Sony finally prompted me to get this project going... so here it is! What's it cost? Not much. The full version costs only US$5.00 because I wanted it to be accessable to as many people as possible. There is a FREE sample version so you can try it. It limits the number of systems you can record but is otherwise fully functional. Anyone purchasing a copy of release 1.00 and providing an email address will receive the next release at no extra charge. All feedback and suggestions for improvements are welcome and can be discussed on our FaceBook page. What do I need to use it? Yes and No. You will need either Microsoft Access 2007 or 2010 installed to use the database. Access is included with MS-Office Professional, but not the lesser editions. The good news is that it works with the FREE run-time version of MS-Access 2007 which is available from Microsoft, and is easy to install. The fssKey database and application are contained in a single .accde file and can be moved around as you need. It doesn't really need to be installed properly. The data can be accessed anywhere you can open an Access 2007 format database file Is it secure? It's only as secure as you make it. The database is not encrypted, so if you have the full version of Access you can actually link or import the tables and see all of the data. Because it is so portable however, you can use other strategies to secure the data. If you are really concerned about internet security, you could keep it on a thumb drive and hide it under your pillow at night! If you're not quite as paranoid as that, you could keep it on your PC and use file and network security to control access or compress it with a program like WinZip or RAR and put a password on the compressed file. There is a basic master password system to prevent casual access. We don't recommend it for keeping records of bank accounts and credit card details. Keeping this data in fssKey is probably equally in breach of the conditions of use of those accounts as writing your PIN on a slip of paper in your purse or wallet. fssKey is really to help you keep track of all of your less critical passwords and other bits of obscure reference data. How do I get a copy? The sample version can be downloaded here: Release 1.00 Installer (exe) (an automatic installer) Release 1.00 Files (zip) (for manual installation) Note that you should never run programs from a browser. First download (or "save") the file. Then open the containing folder and use right-click / Properties to see the file properties. Click the [Unblock] button (if there is one) to prevent Windows blocking the program from running properly. It's good practice to run a virus checker over any downloaded program or files before opening or running them. Then run the program or unzip the zip file where you want it. The full version can be downloaded after processing your payment via PayPal or credit card. After payment you will be directed to a download page. I look forward to you hearing from you.
